A depleted Manchester City squad took on a much different-looking Chelsea side at the Etihad today in the Third Round of the EFL Cup.
Potter's men had lost their last two Premier League games coming into this fixture against a Manchester City side that had only lost a single game all season so far.
Manchester City went into this match without their star men Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden in their starting eleven.
City were the favorites going into the match and came out on top as Chelsea crashed out of the tournament they had gone into the final of last time around.
Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez broke the deadlock with a beautifully taken free kick at the start of the second half.
And less than five minutes later, Julian Alvarez doubled City's lead after he got the end of Mahrez's rebound.
City was comfortable the whole game with nine shots on target compared to Chelsea's five as they stood the victors with a two-nil scoreline.
Midfielder Kalvin Phillips made his return after a long injury in the 50th minute of the game. The player will now also be representing England in Qatar next week.
Chelsea Manager Graham Potter expressed his disappointment with the result but said that he was happy with the team's performance.
