Most Popular Anime in Japan Right Now: The Apothecary Diaries on Top

Since January 12, The Apothecary Diaries has been Japan’s most-watched TV show across all streaming platforms, showcasing its immense popularity nationwide.

The anime has been leading both the male and female demographics, and especially has a massive following among adults and older audiences in Japan.

The season premiere was also the Second Most-Watched Anime broadcast on Japanese television during that week, only behind the long-running hit Sazae-san, as 6.73 million viewers (5.4%) across 4.67 million households tuned in for the show’s sophomore outing. These figures are especially impressive considering the fact that the late-night anime landscape is often dominated by Shonen Jump or Shonen anime.

No new anime from the Spring 2025 season has come close to the kind of success The Apothecary Diaries is enjoying on broadcast television in the country.

Meanwhile, Sakamoto Days has been the breakout hit of the season and has been pulling huge numbers, especially across Netflix. The action-comedy is currently the second most popular anime in Japan across all streaming and VOD services.

Most Popular Anime in Japan Right Now: Detective Conan and One Piece remain strong in the Top 5.

Most Popular Anime in Japan Right Now: Detective Conan and One Piece in the Top 5.

Detective Conan is still going strong and is at the third spot, just beating out One Piece.

The latest film in the anime franchise, Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram, is the highest-grossing film of 2024 in Japan, making over $100 Million at the domestic Box Office and $150 million globally. The movie is also the highest-grossing film of the franchise, as the series shows no signs of slowing down close to three decades after the premiere of the anime series.

Season 2 of Solo Leveling has also enjoyed strong fanfare in Japan, with the anime comfortably sitting among the Top 5 Most Popular Anime in Japan on Streaming and VOD Services.

Meanwhile, with the help of Dragon Ball DAIMA, which is currently posting great numbers on both broadcast television and streaming, the Dragon Ball anime franchise is in the sixth spot.

The success of the Medalist anime is also worth noting. While the anime did not make the Top 10, it has consistently been among the Top 20 most-watched TV shows in Japan on streaming.
