The first reactions to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad have finally arrived. After more than half a year of hiatus, Warner Bros.’ DCEU continues with the villain-centric movie. Deemed a soft reboot/sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 original film, Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad brings some familiar faces and teaming them up with several new players for Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) upcoming mission.
Born out of Gunn’s most difficult professional experience, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker scored the gig to write and direct The Suicide Squad shortly after he was fired by Disney from the MCU. Eventually, he was rehired to continue his work with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but having previously committed to the DCEU film, Gunn focused on making the villain-focused blockbuster. Like the original Suicide Squad, its follow-up sees Waller rounding up some of the franchise’s best antagonists for a dangerous mission in exchange for shortened jail time. Task Force X will have to work together if they want to successfully destroy any trace of Project Starfish, not to mention keep themselves alive.
With less than a month away from hitting theaters and HBO Max, several critics have been given early access to watch The Suicide Squad. Now, the embargo has been lifted and non-spoiler initial reactions to the film are now available online. Check out the round-up below:
I recently got to see #TheSuicideSquad on @IMAX, which was an ill experience. @JamesGunn took full advantage of that hard R, delivering a big bad of MADNESS that's the most James Gunn film I've ever seen. The best choice for a @SuicideSquadWB film, IMO. pic.twitter.com/LTsApE2lnK

I had the BEST time watching #TheSuicideSquad — it is a swing-for-the-fences kind of comic book movie & I love that. It's big, bold & visually stunning. You will see James Gunn’s horror roots splattered all over this thing. It’s violent, but hilarious. Angry, but also VERY sweet. pic.twitter.com/qUbXQ75abt

#TheSuicideSquad is a film that delivers on its promise. It’s fun, very chaotic, extremely violent, hilarious & keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is exactly how a Suicide Squad movie should look. The cast’s chemistry is superb & allows everyone a chance to shine. pic.twitter.com/DbJuLrJEyn

Caught #TheSuicideSquad, DC's most goriest film to date. James Gunn definitely gives as much as he can for an R rating. Action and comedy to its fullest form. Fans will appreciate seeing his Troma roots in display. Everyone is having a blast, especially Margot Robbie & Idris Elba pic.twitter.com/g9PB7OnN58

#TheSuicideSquad is an epic all out war movie that demands to be seen on the big screen. Gunn does it again with a hilarious cast of oddballs and under used comic characters.
Big laughs, bigger action. DC has another winner on its hand. pic.twitter.com/zogxvQAZo3

#TheSuicideSquad is fantastic! A no holds barred, superhero/comics bonanza. Unpredictable in story, unique in style & full of risks. It’s also violent & hilarious. Action set pieces are insane. Idris Elba, Margot Robbie & rest of cast are awesome. @JamesGunn has done it again. pic.twitter.com/7aLiMLPPf5
