Anime and manga have always been a multi-billion dollar industry in Japan, but the enormous success of Demon Slayer has supercharged the industry even further.
In 2020, with the records-shattering success of Demon Slayer, Japan’s manga market value hit a new record of ¥612.6 billion ($4.83 billion). The same year, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train also became the highest-grossing film in Japan and made over $500 million worldwide.
The movie came out in Bluray and on DVDs in 2021, where it broke some more records, selling more than 1 million copies.
This momentum further continued in 2021, and with the introduction of new Shonen heavy-hitters such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers, once again in 2021, the sales of print and electronic manga and manga magazines in Japan increased by 10.3%, to ¥675.9 billion ($5.33 billion), marking the second consecutive annual record high.

Shonen manga are now more popular than ever, selling millions of copies even before a television adaptation. When they are getting an anime adaptation, titles like SPY x FAMILY, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Tokyo Revengers are just about dominating everything.
More anime titles are getting canon movies, and even filler movies for franchises such as Dragon Ball and My Hero Academia are very commercially successful worldwide.
Anime is conquering every streaming service in Japan, and manga are flying off the shelves. Both the mediums are only getting more popular and more mainstream every day on a global scale. Today, we are taking a look at the list of the Top 10 Highest-Grossing Anime Franchises of 2022 so far. Let’s get started.
1. Jujutsu Kaisen~ $145 Million
Jujutsu Kaisen ranks first on the list, making over an estimated total of $145 Million in Japan within the first seven months of the fiscal year of 2022.
The movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, was released in Japan during the Christmas of 2021 and was a huge success, as it went on to gross over 13.5 Billion Yen ($100 Million) at the domestic box office. The series has also made over $45 million from the manga sales during this time, with the manga series comfortably sitting atop the Oricon Yearly Charts right now, selling more than 9.6 million copies.
Volume 18 of Jujutsu Kaisen, which was released in December 2021, is currently the Best-Selling Manga Volume for the fiscal year of 2022, with more than 2 million copies sold.
The Second Season of the anime is currently in production at MAPPA and is scheduled to come out in 2023.
2. Detective Conan~ $69 Million
Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is currently the highest-grossing film in Japan for the calendar year of 2022, making over 8.79 Billion Yen ($65.2 Million) at the Japanese Box Office since its release in April. The film is directed by Susumu Mitsunaka (Haikyuu!!) and is the twenty-fifth instalment in the Case Closed film series.
Additionally, the series has also made $4 million in manga sales so far this year, putting the total of the Detective Conan Franchise into an estimated $69 million for 2022 already.
3. Tokyo Revengers~ $36 Million
Tokyo Revengers has also dominated the Oricon Monthly Charts for the last twelve months as it has been the top-selling manga series for more than half of those.
The series has released three volumes this year, with Volume 25, which was released in December, being the Best-Selling Volume of the year so far for the manga, selling over 1.1 million copies as of May. Volume 26 of the series has sold over 1 million copies as of June 1st. While Volume 27, which was released in April, has already sold over 900,000 copies.
Tokyo Revengers is in the third spot on the list just on the basis of the manga, with the series earning more than $35 million in manga sales. The manga is currently in its final arc on Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine.
4. SPY x FAMILY~ $28 Million
With the anime off to a staggering start and the release of Volume 9 of the manga series coinciding with the anime’s premiere, SPY x FAMILY has gotten an enormous boost and has sold over 6 million manga volumes this year. The series sold over 2.3 million copies just in April and over 1.7 million copies in May.
SPY x FAMILY has now become the 3rd Best-Selling Manga of the year in Japan and is also currently the 4th Highest-Grossing Anime Franchise of 2022, making over $28 million with just manga sales.
5. Doraemon~ $20 Million
The latest Doraemon movie, Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021, is currently the Second-Highest Grossing Anime Movie of the calendar year and is the only other anime movie in the Top 10 for overall box office gross this year so far.
Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 is the 41st theatrical entry in the beloved Doraemon franchise and was released in the Japanese theatres in March. During its run at the Domestic Box Office, the film accumulated over 2.64 Billion Yen ($19.6 Million) and sold over 2.2 million tickets.
6. One Piece~ $19 Million
One Piece is currently the 6th Highest-Grossing Anime Franchise of the year, having sold more than 4.2 million manga volumes during this fiscal year. The series is likely to enter the Top 5 later this year after the release of One Piece Film: RED.
7. My Hero Academia~ $17 Million
My Hero Academia is also amongst the Top 5 Best-Selling Manga Series of the year right now, selling more than 3 million copies during the fiscal year of 2022. Additionally, the series has made over $2.5 million with the home release of the third movie in the franchise, My Hero Academia: World Heroes Mission, which sold more than 50,000 BD/DVD discs.
8. Demon Slayer~ $16 Million
Demon Slayer has dominated the Oricon charts for the last two and a half years. With the broadcast of the Entertainment District Arc this year, the series has sold over 2.6 million manga copies.
While the home release of the Entertainment District Arc sold over 80,000 BD/DVD discs over four volumes, making another $3.6 million through it.
9. Crayon Shin-chan~ $14.5 Million
Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpūden is the 11th Highest-Grossing Film in Japan for the calendar year. The 30th cinematic entry in the wildly popular Shin-chan series has made over 1.93 Billion Yen ($14.3 Million) so far at the domestic box office and is also currently the third highest-grossing anime movie of 2022.
10. The Quintessential Quintuplets~ $13 Million.
The Quintessential Quintuplets ended its run with a climax feature film that was released on May 20th in Japan. Within just four weekends at the box office, The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie has made over 16.3 Billion Yen ($12.1 Million) at the Domestic Box Office. The movie has also sold more than 1 million tickets.
Additionally, the manga series also recently got a minor boost selling more than 200,000 copies in the week of the film’s release.
