Known to many as one of the greatest rappers of all time, Eminem’s latest release, The Death of Slim Shady, is making significant waves in the music industry as the fifteen-time Grammy-winning rapper continues to draw a massive number of listeners, showcasing his enduring commercial impact that has withstood the test of time.
Despite mixed reviews, with some critics and fans praising the album and others dismissing it as “corny,” The Death of Slim Shady has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 281,000 units (114,000 pure sales).
The Death of Slim Shady becomes Eminem’s 11th No.1 album on the Billboard 200 as the “Rap God” singer is now tied with Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and Ye (formerly Kanye West) for the fifth-most No. 1s on the Billboard 200. Ahead of them are The Beatles (a record of 19 No. 1s), Jay-Z and Taylor Swift (each with 14) and Drake (13).
Eminem also breaks Taylor Swift’s long reign atop the Billboard 200 as the Anti-Hero singer, whose album The Tortured Poets Department held the number one position for 12 consecutive weeks, just failed short of breaking Stevie Wonder’s record of spending the most consecutive weeks at the No.1 spot from debut, despite releasing 34 Different Versions of her latest album across Vinyl, CDs, and Cassettes.

According to Luminate, Of The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)’s 281,000 first-week units, SEA units comprise 164,500 (equaling 220.08 million on-demand official streams of the tracks on the streaming edition of the album; Death also debuts at No. 1 on Top Streaming Albums), album sales comprise 114,000 (all from digital downloads; it wasn’t available as a physical album) and TEA units comprise 2,500.
The Death of Slim Shady by Eminem also recorded the Biggest First Week Sales in Rap for 2024.
Shortly after the album came out, Candace Owens, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump and critic of the Black Lives Matter movement, hit back at Eminem by calling him “Grandpa Shady” after Eminem fired shots at her and called her a “MAGA dirtbag in a skirt” and “Klandence” in the sixth track “Lucifer” of his newly released album.

Owens was quick to reply and said, “I was honored when Dave Chapelle made fun of me, because Chapelle is in his prime. Grandpa Shady is just depressing to me. Eminem should retire or evolve.”
Well, Eminem may be over 50, but there are not many rappers, regardless of their age, who can command such a large audience, and probably none who are doing it quite like him after crossing the half-a-century mark.
The Death of Slim Shady surpassed the first-week sales records set by major artists like Metro Boomin, Future, 21 Savage, and Yeat, and has recorded the biggest first week of sales for rap in 2024. Not so bad for a grandpa, we reckon.
