Chappell Roan has revealed that her dissatisfaction with the US government is the reason she hasn’t endorsed any candidate in the 2024 presidential election, including Kamala Harris.
The pop star who is openly and proudly queer is one of 2024’s breakthrough artists, with both her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” as well as her single “Good Luck, Babe!” currently sitting in the Top 10 of Billboard 200 and Hot 100 respectively months after their release.
Despite Roan’s song “Femininomenon” having being associated with Kamala Harris’s campaign, Roan, 26, has remained neutral, even as other celebrities like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, and Meryl Streep have backed the Democratic candidate.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Roan explained why she’s hesitant to endorse any politician. “I have so many issues with our government in every way. There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone,” she said.
Roan emphasized that she personally believes there to be problems on both political sides and wants other people to be thoughtful with their votes: “I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote – vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city.”
When asked about the kind of changes she’d like to see in the country, Roan was clear: “Trans rights. They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.”
Given that the artist says she stands in solidarity with trans people and their rights, but among the two candidates, Harris is the only one who acknowledges the LGBTQ+ community and their rights, while the republican candidate and former president Donald Trump and his supporters, which include influential people such as Elon Musk, have been publicly homophobic and transphobic, and have even been complicit in spreading misinformation and hate speech towards the community to millions of their followers, Roan’s quote to The Guardian has seen a huge amount of backlash on social media from fans who expect her to publicly endorse Harris over Donald Trump.
Roan, who is currently wrapping up her UK tour with two shows at London’s Brixton Academy, has been supporting LGBTQ+ causes, donating £1 from every ticket sold during her UK tour to the LGBTQ+ rights charity Kaleidoscope Trust.
