Brandon Routh’s Superman which exists on Earth-96 in the Arrowverse is rumored to be getting his own post-crisis series on The CW or HBO Max.
Yes, you have heard that right. Following the massive critical acclaim and overwhelming response by the fans for dawning the cape once again in The CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, it is rumored that Brandon Routh might be getting his very own limited series of the Man of Steel in The CW or more likely on HBO Max.
Ryan Unicomb, who has been a very reliable source for breaking DC-related news in the past posted about the possibility of the new Superman series and stated that:
“I have heard this twice now in too close a fashion for it to be a false lead, so I’m willing to put this out there. Due to an overwhelmingly positive response to his brief appearance in the 2019/20 CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS crossover event; actor Brandon Routh, Producer Greg Berlanti & a small collection of creatives originally involved in 2006’s “Superman Returns” have met with WarnerBros over the last few days to discuss the potential of a Post Crisis SUPERMAN limited series for The CW or the more likely option, HBOmax. The outing would see Routh return as the titular character and reunite him with “established characters in Superman lore”. This would be developed alongside the recently announced straight to series SUPERMAN & LOIS, also Produced by Greg Berlanti.”
It feels more natural to have the show on HBO Max as not only limited series are more of their thing but The CW already has its Superman show with “Superman and Lois” starring Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch set to premiere next season.
HBO Max will also have the budget to do Brandon Routh’s Superman justice as it is also developing a Green Lantern series helmed by none other than the Arrowverse godfather Greg Berlanti with a reported budget of a hundred million dollars.
Routh’s Superman is the continuation of Christopher Reeve’s Superman and he first debuted in the ill-fated Bryan Singer movie, Superman Returns. The movie was both critically and commercially a bust. Thus, a sequel was never made.
And Brandon never got to play the Man of Steel again until he dawned the suit once again in Crisis on Infinite Earths as the Kingdom Come Superman, which proved that Routh was always a stellar Superman and Superman Returns never fully exploited his potential.
The mega-crossover not only redeemed Routh’s Superman but also amassed an outpouring amount of love for him by the fans. And fans have not been able to get enough of him since.
Routh played Kingdom Come Superman in the Crisis who lost his Lois Lane alongside Perry White, and Jimmy Olsen when The Joker played a practical joke on them since he felt that the Daily Planet didn’t cover him enough. The conclusion of the five-part crossover saw him in his old red and yellow crest instead of the Kingdom Come version of the costume suggesting that the events have been altered due to Rebirth.
We certainly want to see his Superman again and only time will tell whether this rumor is true or not. But we are keeping our fingers crossed for this series.
