Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale have just announced the nominees for the 2024 Emmys, with Shogun, Ripley, The Bear and The Morning Show heavily dominating the headlines with a slew of nominations across multiple categories. The Bear set a new record for nominations in a single year in the Comedy category with 23 (previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009), and Shōgun led this year’s Drama category with 25 nominations. Selena Gomez has also been nominated for her first Emmy as an actor for her performance as Mabel Mora in Only Murders in the Building.
Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada become the first Japanese actors to be nominated as the Lead in a Drama Series.
Shogun’s domination this year is quite a historic feat as it is only the second time after Netflix’s Korean drama Squid Game made history that a non-English-language TV Show has gotten the nod for the Outstanding Drama Series. Anna Sawai is the first Japanese Actress to have gotten an Emmy nomination as the Lead Actress in a Drama Series while Hiroyuki Sanada is the first Japanese Actor to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Previously, actor Masi Oka was the only Japanese Actor to have been nominated in a Drama Series category for their performance in Heroes as the supporting act.

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime’s Fallout has successfully carried the baton that was passed by HBO’s The Last of Us, as the hit sci-fi series nabbed an impressive 17 Emmy nominations, including the nod for Outstanding Drama Series. The Last of Us was nominated for a staggering 24 Emmys last year and won in 8 categories.
The 76th Emmy Awards will take place on September 15 and will be live on ABC from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. If you’re wondering why the Emmys seem so recent, it’s because the 75th Primetime Emmys were held in January, delayed from their usual September slot due to the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes.
