Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’s First Japanese Broadcast Brings More than 11 Million Households

The movie Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train was broadcasted for the first time on Japanese television on September 25 after its release on the big screens last year. And the movie has continued to break any and all sorts of records even after almost a year since its theatrical release.

The Demon Slayer movie recorded a 21.4% audience rating in Japan during its broadcast on Saturday and saw 10.992 million households tune in to the broadcast. The movie peaked at 22.9% during its broadcast as 11.762 million households were spending their Saturday night catching the movie’s broadcast.

This broadcast of Mugen Train was the biggest anime broadcast of the 21st century in television and is the largest since Detective Conan‘s broadcast in April 1999 which garnered a rating of 23.4%. It is notable that the number of households that had satellite television in Japan during that time was somewhere around 12.5 million, which is vastly different from the current time.

Following this broadcast which also revealed the release date for Season 2 (Entertainment District Arc), all volumes of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba have re-entered the Oricon Top 50 for manga sales.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train has grossed over $503 million.

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train grossed over half a billion dollars in the box office worldwide and sold over 41 million tickets, but it is still impressive to see just how many records this franchise can break.

Mugen Train is also the first Non-American film in history to take the Number 1 spot in the Worldwide Box Office for a year and is also the highest-grossing film that is neither American nor Chinese.

The movie also sold 1.31 million copies with its home release in just five days and had already sold BD/DVD worth $75 million when we were last keeping track.

Meanwhile, the encore broadcasts in preparation for Season 2 have also been airing in Japan. The Mt. Natagumo Arc which aired on September 19 scored a rating of 14.7% in its Sunday 19:00 timeslot while the Tzuzumi Mansion Arc from the show which aired the day before had a rating of 14.4% across the country during the same timeslot.
